Cockles & Blood Clams (a
type of Arkshell Clam) are a saltwater |
marine mollusc found world-wide and are available year round, they are
both wild caught (dredged) and farmed.
Cockles (Cerastoderma edule)
are found in coastal areas of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean | Northern
Europe. Cockles are commercially fished in the UK, Ireland and France by
dredging or raking. Cockles are also farmed in the United
Kingdom, Netherlands and Portugal.
Blood Clams are found found throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
Farmed Blood Clams are raised in river estuaries in S.E. Asia.
Blood Clams & Cockles have a sweet & slightly salty
flavour with a firm and chewy texture. They are very popular as a
ceviche dish (acid cooked) and can be eaten raw, steamed or boiled.
Cockles and clams are low in fat and carbohydrates and are very rich in
protein. Cockles are low calorie, a high source vitamin B12 and iron and
a moderate source of Omega-3.
